    Who's that Pollinator?! It's a Bumble Bee!

Did you know these buzzy bees are excellent pollinators? These fuzzy friends are able to fly in cooler temperatures, which means they get their start earlier in the season than many bees. They also perform what is known as "buzz pollination" where the bee grabs onto the pollen producing structure in a flower and vibrates her wings. This dislodges a lot of pollen that then covers the bee!

Like their famous cousins the honeybee, Bumble Bees are social insects! They live in a colony, and every member of the colony has a different job. They're the only social bees native to North America! Bumble Bees form their nests in abandoned rodent burrows, but they also have been found in hollow trees and rock walls. Unlike honeybees, their colony has a natural lifespan of one year, only recently emerged queen bees will hibernate through the winter, waiting for spring to start her new nest and colony.

How can you help the bumble bee? Plant a variety of plants that grow bloom in different seasons, leave some nesting spaces for these powerful pollinators, and avoid using pesticides.
