We’re BATTY for today’s pollinator! Did you know bats pollinate crops in tropical and desert climates? The pollination of plants by bats is called chiropterophily and over 300 different species of fruit depend on bats for their pollination!

If you enjoy mangoes, bananas, or guavas, you can thank a bat for helping you get your favorite fruit! Two other notable plants, the Agave plant and the Saguaro Cactus also depend on bats for pollination.

Flying Foxes, aka fruit bats, are also important pollinators! They are responsible for the pollination of eucalyptus trees and are the farthest-flying pollinator in Australia!

So how can you support these important pollinators? Be a Bat Buddy and spread the word about the important work they do! You can also promote natural bat habitat around your home by leaving dead or dying leaves (in areas where they aren’t hazardous) for ground-roosting bats, provide shelter by installing a bat box on your property, and feed hungry bats by limiting pesticide use since bats also love bugs and can eat thousands of them in a single night!
