5 Interactive Lesson Plan Ideas for Kindergarten Science: Exploring Insects

#1 Butterfly Life Cycle Magic Theater

Create a classroom "theater" where children can act out every stage of the butterfly life cycle, based on their current observations of their individual project. Crawl like a clever caterpillar, keep quiet as a chrysalis or spread your wings for the first time as an adult butterfly! Craft a cute costume for each stage of the life cycle using art supplies like pipe cleaners, colored paper, paints and more! 

#2 Metamorphosis Comparison Lab 

Have your students compare the progress of their caterpillars with side-by-side observation. Are there any notable differences in size or behavior? Children can create simple "venn diagrams" comparing and contrasting the life cycles of different insects, such as caterpillars and ladybugs. The similarities may surprise you!

#3 Backyard Bug Safari

A nature study can't be complete without an adventure outdoors! Take your class outside for a safari to observe as many wild insects as possible. Instruct your students to observe the insects at a distance as many species are too fragile to handle. Observe insects with a magnifying glass and see what questions your students have about their behavior. Create a "field guide" beforehand with your expectations of the adventure, and compare them with your notes once the trip is done! #4 Pollinator Garden Planning Project

Create your own pollinator garden! Research local and native plants in your area and plot where they should be planted in your space. Watch the experience come full circle as you observe local butterflies and other pollinators visit your garden. They may even lay eggs close by, leading to another generation of pollinators! 

#5 Insect Bodypart Building Workshop

Build a Bug! Have your students create their own butterfly, chrysalis or caterpillar using the craft materials listed above. This activity is a terrific way to teach children insect anatomy, whether you are using pipe cleaner to make fuzzy antenna, or colored cardboard for butterfly wings! Have your students study pictures and figurines of insects and have them try to recreate them with their own creative spirit. Have them "play" with their new figurines to further study insect functionality!
