How Chrysalides Hang

Whoa! Is this some form of fungus, or strange sea creature? If you can believe it, it's actually the very top of a Painted Lady chrysalis! The velcro-like texture allows the chrysalis to attach and "hook" onto a wide variety of surfaces. By hanging on a surface up high, the chrysalis keeps itself out of reach of any predators or other intruders, allowing the butterfly to develop and grow safely inside!
