It's easy to look at a butterfly's chrysalis and mistake it for a tough, impervious shell. However, it's important to remember that the chrysalis is a living thing, and is just as fragile as a caterpillar or butterfly! That's why we recommend that you handle the caterpillar cup as gently as possible and make sure that you do not shake or disturb the chrysalides as they develop. Shaking the cup or handling it roughly can hurt the chrysalides or even cause them to fall from the top of the cup. When it's time to transfer them into their habitat, be sure to handle the chrysalides gently and remove any webbing or food stuck to their surfaces. This helps to ensure the butterfly inside can emerge safely.
