Using the Pop-Up Port-A-Bug in the Classroom There's no limit to what you can do with the Port-A-Bug with students, but here's one idea to get you started. Select one student as the official Port-A-Bug porter for the day. This special student can wear the Port-A-Bug in its case, clipped to his or her hip, ready for action. At re cess, lunchtime, or during P.E. other students who encounter friendly bugs on the playground alert the Port-A-Bug porter, who pops up the habitat and makes the catch. Back in the classroom, the porter and the student who made the find take a quick minute to share their catch with the class, practicing their impromptu public speaking skills, and insect identification skills: Where did they find it? How did they catch it? What kind of insect is it? What stage in its life cycle is the insect? What characteristics make this insect unique? - just a few possiblilities for classroom discussion. Afterward, they hang the Port-A-Bug somewhere safe for students to observe between work periods. At the end of the day, the Port-A-Bug porter releases the insect back onto the playground with a hearty "thanks for visiting"! The next day, start the whole process again with another official Port-A-Bug porter, until everyone's had a chance. The Pop-Up Port-A-Bug is available at the insect lore store here. |
